Provision of Food and Drink

Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made food and drink readily available for mankind, ensuring our survival and well-being. From the rain that falls, to the plants that grow, and the livestock that provide sustenance, every step in the chain of provision is a sign of His wisdom and care. Without His mercy, humans would not be able to sustain themselves.

  1. Rain: The Source of Life and Growth

Water is the foundation of life, and Allah has made rainfall a key source of provision. Allah says:

“And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, in that is a sign for people who listen.” (An Nahl 16: 65)

Without water, plants and crops could not grow, and all life on Earth would cease to exist.

Interesting Fact: The Water Cycle as a Sign of Allah’s Mercy

  • The hydrological cycle (evaporation, condensation, and precipitation) ensures a continuous supply of fresh water.
  • 97% of Earth’s water is in the oceans, yet Allah provides us with drinkable fresh water through rain.
  • Plants store and filter water, keeping it clean for human and animal use.
  1. The Variety of Foods Allah Provides

Allah, in His generosity, has not only provided basic sustenance but has also given us variety, taste, and nourishment. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqara:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُوا۟ مِمَّا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ حَلَـٰلًۭا طَيِّبًۭا وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

“O mankind, eat from whatever is on Earth [that is] lawful and good, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (2: 168)

This verse highlights that food should be both halal (lawful) and tayyib (pure and beneficial).

Hadith: A Balanced Diet in Islam

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged eating a variety of foods in moderation. He said:

“The son of Adam does not fill a vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep him upright. But if he must [eat more], then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath.” (Ibn Majah 3349)

Interesting Fact: Nutritional Benefits in the Qur’an

  • Olive oil: Described as “blessed” (Surah An-Nur 24: 35) – scientifically proven for heart health.
  • Honey: Described as “healing for people” (Surah An-Nahl 16: 69) – used for antibacterial treatment.
  • Dates: The Prophet ﷺ recommended them for strength and nourishment – modern studies confirm their high energy and fiber content.
  1. The Provision of Livestock and Grains

Allah has also made animals and grains a source of sustenance.

“Do they not see that We have created for them, from what Our hands have made, livestock, and they are their owners? And We have tamed them for them, so some of them they ride, and some of them they eat.” (Ya-sin 36: 71-72)

This verse highlights how Allah has made animals obedient to humans — they provide milk, meat, and transportation.

Recognizing Allah’s Mercy in Food and Drink

  • Allah is the Ultimate Provider, ensuring that all creatures receive sustenance.
  • Rain and the water cycle are divine systems that nurture crops and living beings.
  • Allah has given us variety in food, making it enjoyable and nutritious.
  • Livestock and agriculture are signs of Allah’s blessings.
  • Gratitude for food and drink is an essential part of faith.
