My Lord Nurtures Me

Trials as a Test of Faith

From now onwards we will be looking at nurturing through challenges and trials.

Life in this world is filled with trials, hardships, and difficulties, but in Islam, these trials are not meaningless. Instead, they are a test from Allah — a way to purify, strengthen, and elevate the believer. Every challenge we face is an opportunity for growth, patience, and closeness to our Creator.

  1. Trials Are Part of the Divine Plan

Allah has decreed that life on Earth is a test to see who among His servants will remain steadfast in faith and righteousness. Allah says in Surah Mulk:

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفُورُ

“He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed—and He is the Almighty, the Most Forgiving.” (67: 2)

This verse clarifies that life itself is a test, and every hardship we face is a means to prove our faith and sincerity.

Interesting Fact: The Purpose of Hardship in Spiritual Growth

  • Difficulties bring people closer to Allah — often, we pray more fervently during hardship than in ease.
  • Trials expose our weaknesses, allowing us to seek Allah’s guidance and mercy.
  • Just like gold is purified in fire, a believer’s faith is strengthened through trials.
  1. Trials Are a Sign of Allah’s Love

Rather than being a punishment, trials can be a sign that Allah loves a person. The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِعَبْدِهِ الْخَيْرَ عَجَّلَ لَهُ الْعُقُوبَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا

“When Allah loves a servant, He tests him.” (Tirmidhi 2396)

Example: The Prophets Faced the Hardest Trials

  • Prophet Ayyub (Job) عليه السلام suffered extreme illness and loss but remained patient.
  • Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) عليه السلام was betrayed by his brothers, imprisoned, and tested with temptation.
  • Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ faced rejection, persecution, hunger, and the loss of loved ones.

Despite these hardships, they remained steadfast and were ultimately rewarded.

  1. Trials Lead to Purification of Sins

One of the greatest wisdoms behind trials is that they purify sins. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, except that Allah expiates some of his sins for it.” (Bukhari 5641, Muslim 2573)

Allah allows hardships to cleanse our sins, just as water purifies dirt.

Interesting Fact: Scientific Link Between Hardship and Growth

Psychologists call this “Post-Traumatic Growth”, where people become stronger, wiser, and more grateful after enduring hardships.

  • Patience and endurance lead to mental resilience and emotional stability.
  • Trials are a test of faith, designed to strengthen and purify us.
