My Lord Nurtures Me

Physical Strength and Capability

Having understood the different meanings of the word رب and the human connection to Allah, we will now look at the special ways in which Allah nurtures us. One of those ways is Physical Nurturing. In sha Allah, over the next two weeks we will endeavour to get a better understanding of this crucial aspect of nurturing.

Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, nurtures us not only spiritually and intellectually but also physically. The human body is a remarkable creation, endowed with strength, endurance, and resilience. Through divine guidance in the Qur’an and Sunnah, our Lord teaches us how to maintain, develop, and utilize our physical strength for righteous purposes.

  1. The Body as a Trust from My Lord

Allah has granted me my body as a trust (Amanah), and I am responsible for its care and development. This trust requires that I maintain my health, strengthen my body, and use it in ways that pleases my Lord. Allah says:

“And do not throw [yourselves] into destruction with your own hands. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” (Al-Baqarah 2: 195)

This verse nurtures us by reminding us that our physical well-being is not just for our personal benefit but a responsibility that must be upheld in service to Allah and to others.

  1. Strength as a Praiseworthy Quality in Islam

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the value of physical strength, not as an end in itself but as a means to fulfil responsibilities and strive in the path of Allah. He said:

الْمُؤْمِنُ الْقَوِيُّ خَيْرٌ وَأَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ الضَّعِيفِ وَفِي كُلٍّ خَيْرٌ

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although there is good in both.” (Muslim 2664)

This hadith nurtures us by encouraging us to develop our physical capabilities so that we can be more productive, resilient, and effective in serving Allah and the community in which we reside.

  1. Using Physical Strength for Righteous Purposes

Islam teaches us that physical strength is not meant for arrogance or oppression but for fulfilling obligations, protecting the weak, and striving for goodness.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.” (Ahmad 23406)

By maintaining our physical strength, we are able to help others, whether through labour, protection, or charity work. A strong body allows us to be a source of support for those in need.

  1. The Consequences of Neglecting Physical Well-being

When physical health is neglected, it affects all aspects of life, including spiritual and intellectual growth. My Lord warns against excessiveness and self-harm.

وَلَا تَقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًا

“And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.” (An-Nisa 4: 29)

Ignoring our physical well-being leads to weakness, illness, and decreased ability to fulfil our responsibilities. By nurturing our strength, we ensure that we can live a productive and fulfilling life in service to Allah and His creation.
