My Lord Nurtures Me

Building Compassion and Empathy

Compassion and empathy are foundational values in Islam. Allah teaches us to care for one another, feel the pain of others, and assist those in need. Islam is not just about personal worship; it is also about how we treat fellow human beings.

Allah nurtures compassion in our hearts through the Noble Qur’an and the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, urging us to be kind, merciful, and understanding.

  1. Allah’s Mercy: The Source of All Compassion

Allah Describes Himself as “The Most Merciful”

Allah’s mercy is infinite, and He encourages us to embody this trait in our interactions. The two most repeated names of Allah in the Qur’an are Ar-Rahman (The Most Compassionate) and Ar-Rahim (The Most Merciful).

وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ

“And My mercy encompasses all things.” (Al-A’raf 7: 156)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When Allah created the creation, He wrote in His Book, which is with Him above the Throne: ‘Indeed, My mercy prevails over My wrath.'” (Bukhari 3194, Muslim 2751)

  1. The Prophet (ﷺ) as a Role Model of Compassion

The Prophet (ﷺ) was Sent as a Mercy to All Creation

The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best example of compassion and empathy. His kindness extended to the poor, the weak, and even animals.

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Al-Anbiya 21: 107)

  1. Encouraging Empathy for the Less Fortunate

Helping Others is a Duty in Islam

Allah commands us to support the poor, orphans, and needy. Feeling their struggles and helping them is a sign of true faith.

كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

“No! But you do not honour the orphan, nor do you encourage one another to feed the poor.” (Al-Fajr 89: 17-18)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best of people are those who bring the most benefit to others.” (Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat 6192)

Practicing Compassion and Empathy

  • Compassion is a divine trait that we should embody in our daily lives.
  • Empathy should lead us to help those in need.
  • The best people are those who bring the most benefit to others.

Practical Steps to Increase Compassion:

  • Be mindful of how we treat others, even in small interactions.
  • Support the needy with financial or emotional assistance.
  • Follow the Prophet’s (ﷺ) example in daily life.
