My Lord Nurtures Me

Teaching Gratitude Through Contrast

Gratitude (shukr) is one of the most powerful qualities a believer can develop. It brings peace, contentment, and increases Allah’s blessings. However, gratitude is often best understood when contrasted with hardship. How can we truly appreciate ease without experiencing difficulty? How can we recognize the value of light without knowing darkness?

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, nurtures us by allowing us to experience both comfort and discomfort, joy and sorrow, abundance and scarcity. Through these contrasts, we learn to be grateful for His countless blessings.

  1. The Importance of Gratitude in Islam

Gratitude is a fundamental principle in Islam. It is not just about saying “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is for Allah); rather, it is about recognizing, appreciating, and using Allah’s blessings in a way that pleases Him.

Allah says in Surah Ibrahim:

وَإِذْ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكُمْ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ وَلَئِن كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِى لَشَدِيدٌ

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favour]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.’” (Qur’an 14: 7)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

اَ يَشْكُرُ اللَّهَ مَنْ لاَ يَشْكُرُ النَّاسَ

“The one who does not thank people has not thanked Allah.” (Sunan Abi Dawood 4811)

This teaches us that gratitude is a mind-set and a way of life, not just words.

  1. How Contrast Teaches Gratitude
  2. Experiencing Hardship Makes Us Appreciate Ease

When people face illness, they realize the blessing of health. When they experience hunger, they appreciate food. When they go through financial struggles, they value wealth. Allah teaches gratitude by allowing us to experience both sides of life.

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:

وَتِلْكَ ٱلْأَيَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ

“And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people…” (Qur’an 3: 140)

Example: Prophet Ayyub عليه السلام

Ayyub عليه السلام was extremely wealthy and had a loving family. Allah tested him with severe illness and loss of wealth. He remained patient and grateful. When Allah restored his health and wealth, he was even more grateful.

This story shows that those who understand loss truly appreciate gain.

  1. Seeing Others’ Struggles Makes Us Appreciate Our Own Blessings

We often take our comforts for granted. But when we see people struggling, we realize how blessed we are.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Look at those who are lower than you (in wealth and health), and do not look at those who are above you. That is more suitable so that you do not belittle the blessings of Allah upon you.” (Muslim 2963)

Interesting Fact:

Studies show that people who practice “gratitude journaling” (writing down things they are thankful for) experience less stress and greater happiness.

Islam teaches a natural way of practicing gratitude — by observing others and reflecting on our own blessings.

Gratitude is Best Understood Through Contrast

  • Hardships make us appreciate ease.
  • Observing others’ struggles reminds us of our blessings.
  • Every blessing we take for granted is something someone else prays for.
  • Gratitude brings more blessings, contentment, and spiritual success.
  • The truly grateful are among the most beloved to Allah.
