Teaching Accountability in Social Relations
Accountability in social relations is a fundamental principle in Islam. Allah ﷻ commands justice, fairness, and responsibility in our interactions with others. Every action, word, and even intention has consequences, and Islam provides guidelines to ensure that individuals uphold their duties towards family, friends, neighbours, and society at large.
Being accountable means taking responsibility for our actions, correcting our mistakes, and treating others fairly. Through the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah, Allah ﷻ nurtures us socially by teaching us that we will be held accountable for our dealings with others.
- The Concept of Social Accountability in Islam
Islam teaches that every individual is responsible for their actions, and they will be questioned on the Day of Judgment regarding their behaviour towards others.
“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart – all of those will be questioned.” (Al-Isra 17: 36)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock…” (Bukhari 893)
- Accountability in Speech and Truthfulness
Islam teaches that words have power. Speaking the truth, avoiding lies, and refraining from slander are essential in maintaining social harmony.
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.” (Al-Ahzab 33: 70)
The servant speaks words for which he is sent down to the Hell-Fire farther than the distance between the east and the west. (Muslim 2988)
- Accountability in Business and Financial Dealings
Islam places a strong emphasis on honesty, fairness, and justice in business and financial transactions. Cheating, fraud, and exploitation are strictly prohibited.
“Woe to those who give less (than due), those who when they take a measure from people, take it in full, but when they give by measure or weight to others, they cause loss.” (Al-Mutaffifin 83: 1-3)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The honest and trustworthy merchant will be with the Prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs on the Day of Judgment.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1209)
- Accountability in Leadership and Governance
Leadership in Islam is a trust (Amanah), and leaders are accountable for their decisions and treatment of people.
“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.” (An-Nisa 4: 58)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who is most beneficial to others.” (Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat 6192)
