Teaching Balance and Moderation
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, nurtures us by guiding us towards balance and moderation in all aspects of life. Islam is a religion of wasatiyyah (moderation), steering us away from extremes and excessiveness while ensuring that we maintain harmony between our spiritual, physical, intellectual, and emotional well-being.
- The Concept of Balance in Islam
Balance is a foundational principle in Islam. My Lord created the universe with precision and harmony, and He instructs us to reflect this balance in our own life. Allah says:
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ
أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْمِيزَانِ
“And We have set up the balance with justice so that you may not transgress the balance.” (Ar-Rahman 55: 7-8)
This verse nurtures us by reminding us to maintain fairness in our actions, ensuring that we do not fall into neglect or excess in any aspect of life.
- Balance in Worship and Daily Life
Islam teaches us that worship should not be at the expense of our personal responsibilities and vice versa. Our Lord nurtures us by ensuring that we allocate time for both devotion and worldly matters.
The Prophet ﷺ corrected those who took extreme approaches to worship, saying:
“By Allah, I am the most fearing of Allah among you, and the most pious among you. Yet, I fast and I break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. So, whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me.” (Bukhari 5063, Muslim 1401)
Through this guidance, we learn that balance in worship prevents burnout and sustains long-term spiritual growth.
- Emotional Balance: Avoiding Extremes of Anger and Despair
Our Lord nurtures us by teaching us emotional stability, ensuring that we do not fall into uncontrolled anger or despair. The Prophet ﷺ advised:
لاَ تَغْضَبْ
“Do not get angry.” (Bukhari 6116)
Similarly, in times of hardship, our Lord reminds us to maintain hope and trust in Him:
لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ
“Do not despair of the mercy of Allah.” (Az-Zumar 39: 53)
This balance allows us to remain patient in trials and humble in success, ensuring a healthy emotional state that fosters peace and resilience.
- Consequences of Imbalance
When balance is not maintained, it leads to physical harm, emotional distress, financial instability, and spiritual decline. Our Lord warns against excessiveness in all forms:
By adhering to the teachings of balance, we can protect ourselves from the dangers of extremism, unhealthy habits, and societal neglect.
