New Calls For The Removal Of Julius Malema From the Judicial Service Commission

By Umamah Bakharia

There are renewed calls for the removal of EFF leader Julius Malema from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). This is after Malema attacked judges during a protest at the offices of SA billionaire Johann Rupert.

He accused judges of being in the pocket of Rupert and for having played a role in the death of struggle activist Solomon Mahlangu.

Radio Islam spoke to the Judges Matter campaign, Zikhona Ndlebe says the comments by Malema were out of turn especially since he sits in the JSC that is responsible for the appointment of judges.

“It does not make any sense that he can make such comments that are very negative and affect the judiciary,” says Ndlebe.

She adds that when people in powerful positions make such negative comments, it begins to weaken the judiciary.

The campaign reiterates that if Malem has an issue with the judiciary, there are procedures to follow to file a complaint instead of making a public announcement.

“That’s why it is very important for people to read judgements and acquaint themselves with matters that are before courts so that they don’t make judgements based on face value based on what is being said in public,” says Ndlebe.

However, when it comes to the removal of members of the judiciary, parliament has to make a decision.
