Forensics for Justice, a non-profit organisation, is offering an R1 million reward for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the assassins who gunned down well-known African Global Holdings, formerly Bosasa and Gupta company, liquidator Cloete Murray and his son Thomas.
Cloete and his son were shot in an apparent hit in Midrand last Saturday. Forensics for Justice says it will leave no stone unturned in finding the murderers of the father and son.
Paul O’Sullivan, from the organisation, believes it was a targeted hit and that being a liquidator in South Africa is a thankless job that earns many enemies.
O’Sullivan said, “When people can pay hitmen to go and assassinate people, sooner or later, people are going to stop coming forward with information. The crime in this country is going to get completely, completely out of control.”
He believes that the liquidation industry in South Africa needs a complete overhaul, but assassinating liquidators is not the way to go about it. He said it is unacceptable that liquidators are being assassinated for doing their jobs.
He added that there are two types of companies that liquidate, those that are riddled with issues due to poor ethics, market volatility or loss of a big contract and those companies that liquidate because directors are stealing from the company or creditors of the company, or running schemes to avoid paying taxes. When these companies are liquidated, creditors lose their money, and many people lose their jobs. O’Sullivan said it is up to the state to work with SAPS and the forensics department to prosecute such individuals timeously.
Regarding the case, O’Sullivan said that the one police force available to South Africans was riddled with corruption, but they were working with a competent team from the SAPS.
“The police we are working with on this particular matter are competent people, and we will get there. Cloete Murray went above and beyond for his job, leaving a huge void in the industry.”
Sullivan believes arrests are imminent and justice will be served.
