On Tuesday, 25 July 2023, Sweden’s left-wing opposition party called for an urgent parliamentary meeting about the current Qur’an burnings, according to the Middle East Monitor. The foreign policy committee was called on to hold a special conference to discuss the matter.
Morgan Johansson, spokesperson for the Social Democrats’ Foreign Policy exhorted the Swedish government to take action to protect Swedish lives and interests. Johansson said that Sweden was in an exceedingly dire predicament that was only getting worse.
The right-wing administration was reportedly compelled by the Social Democrats to inform the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) of Sweden’s diplomatic dilemma and to let other parties know how it planned to handle the unrest brought on by Qur’an burnings both locally and internationally.
The burning of the Qur’an has sparked international outrage, and as a result, Sweden’s ambassadors from across the Muslim world have been summoned to raise objections over incidents in Stockholm. The call for condemnation and demand for an emergency meeting came in the wake of a demonstration held in Stockholm on Thursday 20 July 2023 where the Qur’an was desecrated and damaged.
The demonstration in Stockholm was planned by a Christian Iraqi refugee in Sweden, who was also accused of burning pages of a Qur’an in June this year, according to Al Jazeera.
On the same day, the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq was set ablaze to protest the ongoing burnings of the Qur’an.
