In the Palestine Report this morning on Radio Islam International, a comprehensive overview of the events unfolding in Palestine was discussed. The interview covered the attacks on Saturday morning, the strategic calculations of Hamas and the potential events that will follow.

The events began with a series of coordinated attacks on Saturday morning, catching both Palestinians and Israelis by surprise. Rockets, numbering in the thousands according to the Palestinian resistance, were launched into Israeli-occupied areas. Simultaneously, Palestinian resistance fighters and supporting groups infiltrated Israeli-occupied territory through various means, including sea, air, and ground.

Unprecedented videos surfaced during the attack, showing Palestinians patrolling Israeli towns in armoured vehicles and cars. Israeli police and security forces took up to two hours to respond to the situation. This delay allowed Palestinian fighters to take control of military posts and even Israeli tanks.

These events are significant for several reasons. They represent one of the biggest Israeli security and intelligence failures in recent times. Hamas managed to surprise even the best intelligence services and challenge Israel’s security system. The timing of the attack, 50 years after the 1973 war, adds historical significance to the events.

Hamas embarked on this daring operation with calculated precision. While the immediate reasons for the attack were cited as Israeli crimes in al-Aqsa and a call to end Israeli impunity, Hamas had been preparing for this for a long time. The operation combined elements of cyberattacks, rocket barrages, ground infiltration, and more, showing meticulous planning.

The attack can lead to the development of further events. Internally, it may lead to the collapse of the Netanyahu government and create unity among Israelis, despite deep societal fissures. Externally, the involvement of other regional actors, such as Hezbollah from Lebanon, could further complicate the situation.

Hamas’s actions suggest a shift in strategy. They seem less concerned about international sympathy and more focused on asserting their rights. They may have detected a moment of strategic weakness in Israel, as well as the potential for internal strife.

Projections for the coming days or weeks indicate a prolonged conflict, with potential for an Israeli ground assault on Gaza. The situation is evolving rapidly, with the United States sending armoured carriers to the region and the potential for more Israeli casualties.

The West Bank is also becoming increasingly volatile, and the actions of Arab states and the Palestinian Authority will be closely monitored. The conflict could lead to a more militant Israeli society and potential prisoner exchange deals, given the number of Israelis in Palestinian custody.
