In an interview on Radio Islam International this morning, El-Hajj Mauri’ Saalakhan, a human rights advocate and author, shed light on the plight of Palestinian-Americans residing in the occupied West Bank. The interview highlighted the increasing tension and violence faced by these dual citizens and their call for U.S. protection.
Three weeks ago, settlers shot dead a Palestinian man during an attack on an occupied West Bank village predominantly populated by American citizens of Palestinian origin. This incident brought attention to the circumstances under which these citizens have chosen to reside in their ancestral homeland. They face a challenging reality as they lack citizenship in their native land and endure oppressive uncertainty about their future.
Saalakhan, speaking from Washington, D.C., emphasised that the relationship between the U.S. and Israel has long been biased, leading to neglect of the rights and safety of Palestinian-Americans. Criticism was levelled at the U.S. political establishment for turning a blind eye to the struggles of these dual citizens and it was noted that the recent ascension of a new Israeli government has only exacerbated the situation.
“…we talk about democracy. We talk about the rule of law. We talk about freedom and justice for all. We talk about liberty. But, you know, our actions speak louder that words,” Saalakhan said about America’s actions throughout history.
Despite being American citizens, these individuals encounter hardships that are intensified by the Israeli occupation. Their daily lives are fraught with tension and violence, making it difficult for them to fully exercise their rights. The continuous oppression and lack of resolution for decades have made life a nightmare for Palestinians in the occupied territories.
“Is the U.S., considering its very biased relationship when it comes to Israel, going to really take into consideration the rights of American citizens who have decided to reside in their homeland, Palestine? No. No. The… American political establishment doesn’t care… this is another expression of the arrogance of power… and the diminution of power on the part of the natives of that land,” Saalakhan said.
Regarding the sentiment among ordinary Americans, El-Hajj Mauri’ Saalakhan acknowledged a growing awareness of the apartheid nature of the Israeli state.
“Alhamdulillah, all praises are to Allah, that there is a growing awareness of the vile nature of this Apartheid Zionist state. People are waking up, and people are increasingly speaking out,” Saalakhan said.
While there has been an awakening among some Americans who express support for justice, the interview highlighted that the propaganda supporting Israel has been deeply entrenched for years, making progress slow. Nevertheless, the increasing number of people speaking out against the injustices in occupied Palestine is seen as a positive sign. Saalakhan noted that there are countervailing efforts in place to minimise the impact of this rising awareness.
The narrative often pushed by the U.S. media revolves around Israel’s right to defend itself, even in the face of criticism. This recurring stance perpetuates the biased relationship between the two nations and leaves Palestinian-Americans in the occupied territories with little hope for assistance from their home country.
Despite the challenging circumstances, there is hope for change. The interview underscored the importance of continuing efforts to raise awareness and support justice for the people of Palestine. While the situation remains complex, the growing awareness and vocal support from various quarters offer glimpses of progress towards a more equitable and just resolution.
As the international community observes this ongoing situation, the plight of Palestinian-Americans serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for constructive dialogue and actions to address the root causes of the conflict and pave the way towards a lasting and peaceful resolution in the region.
