The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has developed a new augmented reality (AR) app which allows users to discover everything they need to know about South African banknotes.

The app takes users on an educational journey across the South African banknotes, including the newly released Nelson Mandela commemorative banknote series.

Some of the features include pop up icons which includes the life of Nelson Mandela in augmented reality with each note telling a different story.

The commemorative notes gives a synopsis of the life of Madiba. The R10 note tells the story of Mandela’s birth in Mvezo, the R 20 about his life in Soweto, the R 50 where he was captured, the R 100 features his incarceration on Robben Island and the R 200 when he was inaugurated as president of South Africa.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the Reserve Bank’s Vuyokazi Dlamba says the app also educates users about the security, technical, design and quality features of South African bank notes including printing techniques and physical characteristics.

“It is a very useful tool, while you are sitting or playing just to get to know your bank notes.”

The SARB app is Available for both Apple and Android devices.
