Samsung has introduced two new solid state drives (SSD’s) to its current range with the 860 PRO and 860 EVO
The Korean company says the SSD’s are aimed at consumers who require fast, reliable performance across various applications, from everyday computing to heavy workloads and graphic-intensive operations.
The higher-end of the two new models, the 860 PRO, offers sequential read and write speeds of up to 560MB/s and 530MB/s, respectively, with random read and write speeds of up to 100K IOPS and 90K IOPS. It’ll be offered in capacities of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB in a 2.5-inch form factor and comes backed by a five-year warranty, or up to 4,800 terabytes written.
The 860 EVO meanwhile which I reviewed, boasts sequential read and write speeds of up to 550 MB/s and 520 MB/s with max random read and write speeds of 98K IOPS and 90K IOPS. You’ll be able to pick up an 860 EVO in capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities in your choice of 2.5-inch, mSATA (up to 2TB) or M.2 (1TB) form factors.
In my testing, I saw noticeable improvements in the 860 Evo’s performance over its predecessor the Samsung 850 Evo. Namely, there are 5-20 MB/s improvements in both sequential read and write speeds. The 2.5-inch version of the Samsung 860 Evo also achieved significantly higher random read and write speeds that are 60-70 MB/s faster.
Vice President of Integrated Mobility Samsung South Africa Craige Fleischer says SSD’s are keeping ahead of the curve as computer technology evolves.
“The 860 PRO and 860 EVO will enable users to take what they do to the next level of speed, reliability and efficiency.”
As ever, the Samsung 860 Evo series is designed to be both affordable and deliver a serious amount of solid-state storage.
The 860 PRO and 860 EVO SSDs are currently available with pricing starting at R 1,599 for the 860 EVO and R2,299 for the 860 PRO.
