Dan Marokane has been appointed as the new Eskom group chief executive officer and is set to join the state-owned enterprise no later than 31 March 2024. Professor Sampson Mamphweli, the head of the Energy Secretariat at the South Africa National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) expressed a warm welcome to Marokane during an interview on Radio Islam International this morning.

Professor Mamphweli highlighted Marokane’s qualifications, citing his prior managerial experience, engineering background, and integrity. The professor emphasised Marokane’s familiarity with Eskom, having previously served as the head of group capital and contributed to the state capture project.

One of the key concerns discussed in the interview was the need for stability at Eskom. Professor Mamphweli underscored the significance of Marokane’s appointment, especially in light of past challenges, including an acting CEO and calls for government prioritisation.

Addressing the issue of navigating politics within Eskom, Professor Mamphweli responded to statements about the historical influence of politics within the board and up to the highest levels of government. He expressed optimism about the current political climate, noting the attention Eskom has received from the office of the President, leading to the establishment of a committee to address policy and load-shedding challenges.

The interview also touched on the focus on dealing with load shedding and acquiring future energy supplies for the country. Professor Mamphweli provided insights into Eskom’s readiness to tackle load-shedding by addressing the root causes, including a detailed plan developed during Mr Makwana’s tenure as the board chair.

Highlighting the financial needs of Eskom, Professor Mamphweli emphasised the urgency of formulating a comprehensive plan to secure the necessary funds, estimated at close to R200 billion. He acknowledged the limitations of relying solely on Eskom’s balance sheet and stressed the need for immediate action.
