SA’s 30th Democracy anniversary marred by crisis: Abahlali baseMjondolo warns of ‘Day Zero’

As South Africa marks 30 years of democracy, the initial joy has faded due to ongoing problems like high unemployment, frequent power cuts, and looming water shortages. Activist group Abahlali baseMjondolo warns of a potential ‘Day Zero’ in parts of Gauteng, including Johannesburg, underscoring the severity of the situation for the country’s most marginalised communities.

In an interview with Radio Islam, Abahlali baseMjondolo’s General Secretary, Thapelo Mohapi, paid tribute to the struggles of those who fought for their rights in Sharpeville, recognising that these rights are the foundation of the freedoms enjoyed today. However, Mohapi expressed concern that the ideals fought for have been disregarded by the present government.

He highlighted the ongoing plight of people living in rural areas, deprived of basic services and dignity, while corruption and unethical leadership further exacerbate their suffering. Mohapi condemns the state capture as a prime example of leaders betraying the trust of the poor by exploiting them for personal gain.

“It is a shame that everyday we hear in the news about a leader who will be arrested because of corruption allegations. Women are harassed on their way to seek basic necessities. There is also no water for many communities, and we are concerned about all these things,” he said.

Mohapi said that we have leaders who serve their own selfish needs and do not use funds for the citizens’ basic necessities or to improve the state of the country.

Mohapi pointed to the eThekwini municipality as a clear example of poor leadership. During a recent three-week strike by municipality workers, the city remained filthy, indicating a lack of effective management, according to Mohapi.

“We have rights written on paper, but nothing is happening on the ground. People on the ground are saying they have had enough now! Communities go to sleep without food, electricity, or a toilet. We, as a movement, had to take the City of Durban to the Human Rights Commission for them to provide basic services. This is proof. Why must we approach the Chapter 9 institution for politicians to deliver what they are supposed to?”

Mohapi urges the public not to lose hope and to refuse to let corrupt leaders continue to govern the country. He calls on citizens to act as activists and speak out against corruption, emphasising the importance of holding those in power accountable for their actions.
“The ANC has failed us, and we will be calling for their removal,” he said.

Mohapi advised the public not to vote for any parties that support Israel. “We will not compromise the solidarity that we have with the people of Palestine and vote for someone who will change the policy that we are in because we are in humanity first and foremost, and that must be on the agenda when we decide who to vote for,” he said.
