Signs of a Renewed Heart – Part 11

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 5 – Transformation: Becoming Who Allah Loves

Signs of a Renewed Heart

My dear brothers and sisters, today is the 29th day of Ramadhan. Tonight this blessed month could be all over — or there may be one more. But regardless, we are at the end. The month that has been our spiritual hospital is closing its doors. And now, we must ask ourselves a question that requires honesty and courage: Has my heart truly been renewed?

Not, did I complete the month? Not, did I pray Taraweeh every night? But deeper: Has my heart changed?

As we continue our journey of heart renewal, let`s speak about Signs of a Renewed Heart.

Why We Need Signs

The heart is invisible. You cannot see it. You cannot touch it. You cannot take an X-ray of your spiritual state. So how do you know if it is healthy? How do you know if this month has done its work?

Allah, in His mercy, gave us signs. Just as a healthy body shows certain signs — energy, appetite, strength — a healthy heart shows signs. A renewed heart shows signs. And recognizing these signs helps us appreciate Allah’s gift and protect what we have built.

Sign 1: Increased Sensitivity to Sin

Before Ramadhan, you may have committed certain sins without much thought. A lie here. A glance there. A moment of gossip. It didn’t bother you much. Now, after a month of fasting and prayer, those same sins feel heavier. They disturb you. You feel the weight of them.

This is a sign of a renewed heart. A living heart feels the sting of sin. A dead heart feels nothing. The fact that you are bothered by your sins is evidence that your heart is alive.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَيَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَأَنَّهُ قَاعِدٌ تَحْتَ جَبَلٍ يَخَافُ أَنْ يَقَعَ عَلَيْهِ”

“The believer sees his sins as if he is sitting under a mountain, fearing it may fall on him.” (Bukhari)

This is not despair. This is awareness. This is sensitivity. This is the sign of life.

Sign 2: Sweetness in Worship

Before Ramadhan, prayer may have felt like a burden. You rushed through it. You checked the clock. Now, after a month of standing in the night, prayer feels different. You find yourself wanting to prolong your sujood. You feel a sense of peace when you recite Quran. You miss prayer when you miss it.

This is a sign of a renewed heart. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“جُعِلَتْ قُرَّةُ عَيْنِي فِي الصَّلَاةِ”

“The comfort of my eyes was placed in prayer.” (Nasai)

When prayer becomes comfort, not burden, the heart has been renewed.

Sign 3: Turning to Allah First

When something good happens to you now, where does your heart go? To gratitude? To sharing the news? Or to Allah? When something difficult happens, where do you turn? To worry? To complaint? Or to prayer and du’a?

A renewed heart instinctively turns to its Lord. He is the first resort, not the last.

Allah describes the believers:

“الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ”

“Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 156)

This is the reflex of faith. When you have it, your heart is renewed.

Sign 4: Decreased Concern with People’s Opinions

Before Ramadhan, you may have worried constantly about what others thought. Your reputation mattered more than your reality. Now, you care more about what Allah thinks. You seek His approval, not human praise.

This is freedom. This is the sign of a heart that has found its true Master.

Sign 5: Increased Compassion and Forgiveness

A renewed heart is a soft heart. You find yourself more patient with your spouse, your children, your colleagues. You forgive more easily. You let go of grudges that used to consume you.

If you find yourself more merciful, your heart has been touched.

Sign 6: Longing for the Hereafter

The dunya feels less important now. You think more about Jannah. You fear the Fire more. You invest in what lasts. This shift in priorities is a clear sign of renewal.

Sign 7: Consistency in Good Deeds

Perhaps the clearest sign: you want to continue. You are already planning how to keep your Quran reading after Ramadhan. You are thinking about fasting the six days of Shawwal. You are committed to maintaining your prayers.

This is the sign that the renewal has taken root. It is not just a Ramadhan phase; it is a life change.

What If You Don’t See These Signs?

If you heard these signs and feel you don’t see them in yourself, do not despair. Renewal is a journey, not a destination. Some seeds grow faster than others. Some hearts soften gradually.

Ask Allah to show you the signs. Ask Him to complete your renewal. The door is still open. Even after Ramadhan, the door of repentance and growth remains wide open.

May Allah grant us clear signs of renewal and complete His blessing upon us. Ameen.
