Ibrahim عليه السلام Echo: Where Footsteps Become Footprints
His son Ismail AS
The relationship between Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS) is one of the most moving and profound examples of love, trust, and devotion in the Holy Qur’an. Their connection reflects not only a powerful familial bond but also a shared mission of obedience to Allah, which left an enduring legacy in Islamic belief and practice.
The Prayer for a Righteous Son
Ibrahim (AS), after many years without children, made a heartfelt du‘ā’ to Allah for righteous offspring:
“My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.” As-Saffāt (37: 100)
Allah answered this sincere prayer:
“So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.” As-Saffāt (37: 101)
This “forbearing boy” was Ismail (AS), who would later prove his patience and submission in one of the greatest trials ever faced by a human being.
The Test in the Desert: Trust in Allah
Following Allah’s command, Ibrahim (AS) took Hājar RA and infant Ismail to the barren valley of Makkah. Leaving them there with trust in Allah, he prayed:
“Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House…” Ibrāhīm (14: 37)
This moment highlighted Ibrahim AS’s absolute reliance on Allah and his confidence that Allah would care for his family.
The Command to Sacrifice
One of the most heart-wrenching and faith-defining events in the Noble Qur’an is when Allah commanded Ibrahim AS to sacrifice his son:
“O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.” As-Saffāt (37: 102)
Ismail (AS) responded with immense faith and courage:
“He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the patient.'”
This mutual submission is a powerful model of obedience and tawakkul (trust in Allah).
The Divine Intervention and Reward
As they fully submitted to Allah’s command, Allah honoured their sincerity:
“And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, ‘O Ibrahim, You have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.” As-Saffāt (37: 103 – 105)
Then came the mercy of Allah:
“And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.” As-Saffāt (37: 107)
This moment became the basis for Eid al-Adha, commemorating their legacy of submission.
Rebuilding the Ka‘bah: A Shared Legacy
Later, Allah honoured both father and son by entrusting them with the rebuilding of the Ka‘bah:
“And [mention] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ismail, [saying], ‘Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.'” Al-Baqarah (2: 127)
This shows their shared commitment to worship and legacy for all future generations.
The story of Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) is one of the most touching and powerful in the Qur’an. Their relationship was filled with love, trust, and faith, yet every major event in their lives was centered on obedience to Allah. From the prayers for a righteous child to the test of sacrifice and the rebuilding of the Ka‘bah, they stood together as a model for all believers.
Their legacy teaches us that the truest love is one that strengthens obedience to Allah, and that submission, even in the hardest trials, brings the greatest rewards.
