South Africa’s civil society has unveiled a report demanding actionable steps be taken to address state capture. The collective response, presented in Braamfontein, reflects the collaboration of civil society organisations within the Civil Society Working Group on State Capture, focusing on the findings of the Zondo Commission.
Letlhogonolo Letshele, from Open Secrets, speaking on Radio Islam International, discussed the group’s efforts. Since 2018, the Civil Society Working Group has been actively engaged in submitting evidence and recommendations to the State Capture Commission. Their involvement spans the duration of the Commission’s proceedings, including responses to recommendations and findings post-completion.
The recent meeting aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Commission and identify areas for improvement.
While acknowledging the limitations of the Commission’s non-binding nature, Letshele emphasises the value of its recommendations, particularly in areas like procurement and the appointment of public officials.
“It’s a Commission, so it’s not legally binding… But it’s really recommendations, so nothing much can be done, but there is information that can be used,” Letshele explains.
Letshele says that the Civil Society Working Group will continue to track the implementation of recommendations.
