In this week’s edition of the Africa Report on Radio Islam International, John Bwasa, a distinguished scholar with a Bachelor of Honours in Education, discussed the imperative to reshape Africa’s narrative from dependency to dignity.

Bwasa, currently pursuing a master’s in French Literature at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, emphasised the need to break free from external influences that have shaped Africa for the past 60 years. He called for a return to African solidarity, citing historical values of mutual support and cooperation among communities.

The conversation outlined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, revealing the necessity for Africa to rely on its own scientists and resources rather than waiting for external assistance. Bwasa highlighted the importance of reviving a sense of solidarity among African nations and fostering self-reliance.

Addressing the situation in Mali and Burkina Faso, Bwasa highlighted the courageous stance taken by leaders like Goita in asserting independence from France. He underscored the significance of these nations standing on their own, controlling their resources, and challenging external pressures.

Bwasa challenged the status quo, urging a step-by-step transformation in education, religion, and politics. He advocated for empowering the people rather than perpetuating control by a select elite. The interview revealed a vision for Africa that transcends mere rhetoric, emphasising practical steps toward self-discovery and empowerment.

Discussing the possibility of a conflict-free Africa, Bwasa proposed cutting ties with the West as a means to avoid internal hostility. He outlined the necessity of unity among African countries, citing instances where Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea collectively resisted external pressures.

The interview disclosed this message: a conflict-free Africa is achievable through unity and self-love. Bwasa called for a departure from the divisions instilled by historical influences and a rekindling of brotherhood among African nations.

The interview is a reflection on the potential for Africa to reclaim its identity, foster internal harmony, and shape its destiny free from external impositions.
