Urgent global action required for sustainable peace in Gaza

Dr Imran Buccus, senior research associate at ASRI, discussed the critical need for a just and sustainable peace in Gaza during the ASRI Report on Radio Islam International.  Buccus highlighted the necessity for an end to the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people and urged immediate global intervention.

Regarding the recent attack on the hospital in Gaza, Buccus underscored the well-documented history of Israel’s denial of responsibility for various attacks, citing evidence from bodies such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He recalled previous incidents, including the tragic killing of the Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, where Israel initially denied involvement.

Calling for an immediate ceasefire, Buccus expressed deep concern about the escalating violence. He also condemned the dehumanising rhetoric directed at Palestinians by certain factions within the Israeli government.

Buccus stressed the need for global mobilisation and the active involvement of world bodies to achieve a just peace. He cited the increasing support for the Palestinian cause on US university campuses, despite resistance from pro-Israeli groups and individuals. Buccus also highlighted the potential role of Muslim countries in advocating for a just peace, acknowledging the complexities arising from geopolitical influences.

Reflecting on South Africa’s historical solidarity with the Palestinian struggle, Buccus noted the ANC’s principled stance dating back to the 1960s. He underscored South Africa’s successful transition from a heavily militarised society to a peaceful one, suggesting that its experiences could offer valuable insights for resolving the conflict in Gaza.

In conclusion, Buccus emphasised the significance of South Africa’s potential role in mediating the conflict, highlighting the valuable contributions of leaders like Aziz Pahad and Ibrahim Rasool in promoting global peace initiatives.

The pressing need for immediate action to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was the central message of the interview.
