During this week’s Auwal Socio-economic Research Institute (ASRI) Report, the focus was on the state of South Africa’s democracy, particularly in relation to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party and its recent rally. Dr. Imraan Buccus, senior research associate at ASRI, shared his thoughts on the rally’s impact, the controversial relationships of political leaders, and the trajectory of the EFF.

The EFF, led by politician Julius Malema, garnered significant media attention due to their recent rally. After a previous failed shutdown attempt, the party’s resurgence has sparked concerns among some observers. Dr. Buccus highlighted the importance of distinguishing political spectacle from serious political work, urging citizens not to be swayed solely by flashy events.

One contentious issue discussed during the interview was the link between political leaders and shady characters. Dr. Buccus pointed out that this problem extends beyond the EFF and the well-known Gupta scandal within the African National Congress (ANC). He emphasised the need for transparency in party funding, as wealthy donors have historically been involved with various political parties, raising questions about undue influence and favouritism.

The conversation also touched on Malema’s alleged close ties with crime intelligence. Dr. Buccus expressed concern about the optics of a crime intelligence boss associating with Malema, especially considering the politician’s past legal troubles. Such associations raise red flags and require rigorous public scrutiny.

Regarding the EFF’s trajectory, Dr. Buccus acknowledged the party’s ability to disrupt the norm of breakaway parties fizzling away. The EFF managed to secure a considerable voter base, primarily comprising young people under 30. However, the challenge lies in motivating these supporters to turn up at the polls. Dr. Buccus suggested that Malema’s fiery rhetoric may inspire many but translating that enthusiasm into higher electoral support remains a hurdle.

To address these issues and move forward, Dr. Bucccus proposed enhancing transparency in party funding and strengthening the role of media and civil society as watchdogs. By critically examining connections between parties and wealthy donors, citizens can demand more accountability from their leaders.
