Global Sumud Flotilla Receives Warm Tunisian Welcome

In brief:

  • The Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest humanitarian maritime mission yet, has docked in Tunisia after departing from Barcelona.
  • The reception in Tunis was warm, with strong popular and official support, despite weather-related delays and legal risks.
  • Participants remain optimistic and united in purpose, ready to proceed with the mission to Gaza amid escalating humanitarian need.

In Tunis, more than a thousand Tunisians gathered at Sidi Bou Saïd on September 7, 2025, to welcome the arrival of the Barcelona flotilla—part of the broader Global Sumud humanitarian mission aiming to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid and participants from at least 44 countries aims to establish a humanitarian corridor to Gaza amid a declared famine.

The flotilla faced delays and setbacks due to severe storms. Some boats had to return for repairs, and technical checks were conducted in the Balearic Islands.

Israeli authorities have declared intent to treat flotilla participants as “terrorists,” with plans to detain them under stringent conditions should they attempt to reach Gaza by sea.

In an interview on Radio Islam International, Ayesha Vahed of the Debrief Network gave an update from Tunis, where the mood remains resolutely positive as delegates from around the world join forces for a united cause.

“It’s been unbelievable. Alhamdulillah, the feeling of sumud has been really been something. [It is a] once in a lifetime experience to witness people all here for the same cause- the resilience, the brotherhood, people helping each other, unity, making khidmah of each other. With the thousands and thousands of people that are here for a united cause- you just see people helping each other, trying to get each other ready for the mission, encouraging each other, remembering the people of Gaza- it’s really, really been a positive experience.”

She noted that the Tunisian people and authorities are strongly supportive, with the government, police, and ordinary citizens welcoming participants, offering homes, and encouraging the mission.

The arrival of the flotilla in Tunisia was celebrated with songs, chants, and an electric atmosphere, as crowds gathered at the port to welcome delegates.

While she acknowledged logistical delays and challenges—such as old boats needing repairs, weather disruptions, and route changes due to political and security concerns—participants remain determined and patient.

Despite threats from Israel to detain activists, she noted that delegates are fearless and eager to sail, prepared for any outcome, including arrest or loss of belongings, as they aim to open a humanitarian corridor to Gaza.

According to Al Jazeera, Tunisia is preparing its own flotilla—Maghreb Sumud—to join the mission once the Barcelona group arrives. Volunteers across Tunisian cities have been collecting vital donations like medicine and infant formula, and equipping vessels with safety gear in anticipation of departure.

Official reports confirm that the flotilla departed Barcelona on August 31, 2025, with about 20 boats carrying food, water, and medicine—marking the most ambitious sea convoy to Gaza to date. More vessels from Italy and Tunisia are expected to rendezvous in the Mediterranean in the coming days.

The flotilla is currently expected to sail from Tunisia toward Gaza around Wednesday, September 10 or 11, though this remains subject to logistical and technical developments.
