Located in the suburb of Emdeni, Soweto, an adjacent township to Lenasia, the grand opening of
Masjid-Ul-Taqwa took place on Sunday.

Construction Committee member Muhammed Naasif Darsot spoke to Radio Islam International about establishing the new Masjid.

He said, currently, Masjid-Ul-Taqwa is the fifth Masjid Soweto. At least 500 residents within the Emdeni area would have to commute to neighbouring areas like Lenasia or Eldorado Park to perform Jummah Salaah or Jamaat at a distance of approximately 25 to 30 minutes.

The culmination of decades of effort, despite the obstacles scattered along the way and great sacrifice from various role players that came together with a dream that became a reality, the Masjid is the work of Dr Suliman Ismail, who has been working in the Emdeni region, as a GP for the last 40 years as well as the Trustees of the Emdeni Muslim Association.

“It is a shared dream amongst a number of people that has been looking to develop a Masjid in the Soweto area,” he says.

Masjid-Ul-Taqwa can accommodate just under 300 people, approximately 250 males and 60 females. The Masjid compound hosts madrassahs and a computer lab for the community to gain benefits. Imam’s quarters are built on the property of the Majid for easy access.
