On the Social Programme this morning on Radio Islam International, Moulana Ebrahim Bham discussed the importance of active participation in the electoral process.
Moulana Bham reminded listeners of the overarching principle to strive to infuse Shariah into every aspect of our lives, including governance. Waiting for an ideal situation should not deter us from taking action now.
Many community members express reservations about participating in the political process. It is crucial to recognise that Islam provides comprehensive guidance not only for personal conduct but also for those who rule over us. Renowned scholars, including Mufti Taqi Usmani and senior Ulama from various countries, emphasise the importance of voting, Moulana Bham said.
The role of governance in religious freedom
The impact of governance extends beyond mere administration; it can significantly affect our Madaaris, Masaajid, and religious duties, Moulana Bham noted. Governing bodies have the power to shape policies that can either protect or infringe upon our religious freedoms. By participating in the voting process, we can help elect leaders who respect and uphold our rights.
Lessons from History
Historically, Muslims have thrived under just non-Muslim rulers. An illustrative example is the migration of Sahaba to Abyssinia, where they found refuge under the just rule of Najashi, who, despite not being a Muslim initially, provided them with freedom and protection.
This historical precedent underscores that a just state, regardless of the faith of its rulers, can uphold the rights and freedoms of Muslims.
Senior Ulama and Muftis across the globe have consistently called upon Muslims to engage in the voting process, Moulana Bham said. Moulana Bham highlights the necessity of voting to ensure that our voices are heard, and our rights protected. By abstaining from voting, we perpetuate the status quo and miss the opportunity to bring about meaningful change.
In our voting decisions, we must also consider the stance of political parties on critical issues affecting the Muslim community worldwide. Any party complicit or silent regarding atrocities, such as the genocide in Palestine, should not receive our support, Moulana Bham said. Our votes should reflect our commitment to justice and our desire to hold ruling parties accountable.
Moulana Bham underscored the importance of becoming active citizens, fulfilling civic duties and holding elected officials accountable. We cannot effect change by remaining passive; participation in the political process is essential. By voting, we can influence policies and ensure that our communities are represented, and our rights safeguarded.
