Synopsis:

This is a collection of narratives of senior scholars of the Indopak region connected to the Deoband school, narrated by Qari Muhammad Tayyib Saheb (RA).

The compilation, translated into English by Moulana Ebrahim Muhammad, includes incidents of Shah Waliullah Dehlawi, Mirza Mazhar Jane-Jana, Shah ‘Abdul Ghani Dehlawi, Shah ‘Abdul Qadir Dehlawi, Shah Isma’il Shahid, Shah Muhammad Ishaq Dehlawi and Sayyid Ahmad Shahid, (may Allah grant them the highest stages of Firdaus).

Biographies’ have the tendency to become mere facts if they are not studied with the fervour of their relevance to our current contexts. Not only were these pious scholars, but they were the revolutionaries of their time and laid the groundwork for popular resistance movements. Their thoughts and states, how they reacted to certain situations shaping our own history, are not only a reflection of Qari Muhammad Tayeb Saheb’s connection with them, but a guide on how we can approach these same challenges in our times.

One such example is of Shah Muhammad Ismail, the son of Shah Abdul-Ghani, the grandson of Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlawi. He was martyred in 1831 during a fierce battle against the Sikhs in Punjab. Though Shah Ismail Shaheed along with hundreds of their followers were killed and defeated in the battle, it shows us that defeat itself is not a sin; sometimes defeat can be an option, especially in the face of oppression. This is something our Ummah has forgotten and these lessons can be learnt from reading through narratives such as these.

Qari Muhammad Tayyib (ra) (1897 – 1983) served as Mohtamim of Darul Uloom Deoband for half century from 1928 to 1980. Darul Uloom Deoband witnessed unprecedented progress during his tenure. He also founded All India Muslim Personal Law Board and headed it till his death. He visited South Africa between 1963-1964.
