Touring America the South African Way!

Many of us grew up hearing about the American dream. Many of us grew up hearing about the allure of the American dream. From lifestyle to brands, foods, and iconic destinations, the appeal of visiting the ‘land of the free’ is undeniable. But just how accessible is it for South Africans? Beyond the distance and time zone differences, there’s a bigger obstacle: the low Rand/Dollar exchange rate. For many, the so-called land of the free is anything but free!

According to Imran Qasim; bio-medical engineer, seasoned traveler, and Operations Director for HFSAA, the halal authority in the US, travel to America, although simple, is definitely expensive. The first thing a potential visitor would need is a visa, which can be obtained at the US Consular. After applying online and submitting a tedious and time-consuming questionnaire alongside the required documents, you will be given a timeslot for an interview which takes place at the embassy. If your documentation is in order and you manage to answer a few basic questions, you’ll be told immediately if your visa has been approved or not. However, if it is rejected, you may consider reapplying…that is, if you can afford to pay the non-refundable, hefty fee of $185 again!

So now that you’re off to America, what can you expect? Imran shared the top five states to visit and why they shouldn’t be missed. The cities of California which include San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego for their beaches, scenery and mild climates. Hawaii for its natural beauty and awesome waves if you’re into surfing. New York, the city that never sleeps, for its unique culture, eccentric vibe, and assortment of people. Florida for its abundance of theme parks and Key West, with its highway through the ocean, are definitely places you would want to visit if you have kids along with you. And finally, if you’re an adventure seeker, Colorado, with its untouched beauty and range of hiking trails, is for you.

Booking in advance should save you quite a few dollars and hidden costs. There are a variety of hotels, motels and Airbnb’s to choose from but don’t expect the standard to be of those the likes you would find in the Middle East, Asia or even back home in South Africa. The most affordable way to get around each state would be to rent a car, as public transport is not so easily available and can be quite pricey. Just don’t forget to get your international driving license before you travel as some states require it.

Halal food in America is a huge challenge. Although HFSAA certifies around 150 eating places across the country, and you can easily access the website to find where they’re located, they can be out of your way if you’re on a time limit. Imran suggests sticking to vegan or seafood options if you cannot find a proper certified restaurant, or even following the age-old South African tradition of carrying your padkos along with you.

America has a general culture of acceptability, especially in the big states. Tourists are unlikely to experience racism or have any bad encounters as most areas are generally safe and crime is not widespread as it is in South Africa. Now that you’re equipped with the knowledge of touring the USA, the American dream is within reach.
