Travel therapy and the effects on mental wellbeing

By Naseerah Nanabhai

Being mentally healthy is as important as being physically fit and contributes to overall wellbeing. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is attributed to coping with daily stresses of life, being productive and realizing one’s capabilities. Therefore, sound mental health is necessary to live a fulfilling life.

While there are many types of mental health issues and treatment methods, research reveals that travel therapy greatly benefits psychological and physical health. Exploring new places and immersing yourself in new cultures is mentally stimulating and here is why:

  • Stress relief – taking a break from your routine to see a new place releases the stress you have been experiencing, allowing your mind to relax and restore.
  • The reset feature – going to different places regularly can improve the benefits you get from vacations. Some people can feel the positive impacts of their holiday for up to five weeks after their return.
  • Improving mental power – chronic stress can negatively affect your memory and goal-setting abilities. A break-away can help you feel more productive and focused when you get back because it allows your mind to rest.
  • Creativity increases – exploring the world can boost your creativity. Exposure to new cultures, making international friends, and studying new languages are linked to better problem-solving skills.

Travel helps you see the world in a new and exciting way. Having new experiences is beneficial for improving brain function and boosting your mental health. Travelling can positively impact your mental health, whether you’re going to another country or escaping for a long weekend in another town.
