Twitter says it’s conducting an initial review of verified accounts and will remove verification from users whose behavior does not fall within its new guidelines.
Last week, the social media site halted verifying user’s accounts in the wake of criticism over organizer of the Charlottesville rally Jason Kessler, a white nationalist having received a coveted blue check mark on his profile.
In a series of tweets, Twitter says verification has long been perceived as an endorsement.
“We gave verified accounts visual prominence on the service which deepened this perception. This perception became worse when we opened up verification for public submissions and verified people who we in no way endorse.”
Twitter says it’s working on a new authentication and verification program.
“In the meantime, we are not accepting any public submissions for verification and have introduced new guidelines for the program.”

Twitter says it will continue to review and take action as the company works towards the new program.
