Update on the Pakistani floods with Qari Ziyaad Patel

By Neelam Rahim

A third of Pakistan is under water due to flooding caused by record monsoon rains. Officials say that 33 million people have been affected by the floods, one in seven Pakistanis.

In a live cross-over to Pakistan, Al-Imdad’s Qari Ziyaad Patel told Radio Islam International that majority of the country is underwater.

Qari Ziyaad points out a village underwater which has become an island. He said it is a tough challenge for the people residing in them to get onto the main roads.

“The floods of 2022 far supersedes any floods in Pakistan or the region.”

The situation is complex, and the magnitude has gripped Pakistan. Qari Ziyaad added that the flooding had displaced over 33 million people, and 1136 people have lost their lives thus far. Approximately 10 billion dollars worth of damage has been caused.

Currently at the Sindh province in Pakistan and headed towards Mirpur, Qari Ziyaad tells Radio Islam these areas are very much under water.

He said the most human population of Pakistan is in the Sindh province; hence, most human suffering is found here.

There are still monsoon rains in parts of the country while other regions may have sunshine, although it’s going to take weeks for all of the water to dry up.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast predicts much more rain to come through, making the monsoon rains not yet finished. This will exacerbate the dire situation in Pakistan.

According to Qari Ziyaad, the many people they met thought they would die as they had never witnessed a monsoon rain like this before. Some may say it is climate change, but this has been the first time these people have seen a phenomenon like this.

Regarding the need of the hour, Qari Ziyaad said Al-Imdad is filtering much-needed aid in the form of food which is a dire need right now, including clean drinking water and tents as well as medication.

The Al-Imdad foundation, with its partners, will be stationed in Pakistan for approximately 10 to 12 months to have and overlook Pakistan relief operations.
