Vodacom & Telkom Sign Multi Billion Rand Network Sharing Agreement

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 08-11-2018

Mobile network Vodacom says it has entered into a roaming and facilities leasing agreement with Telkom.

Vodacom said the multi-billion rand agreement would allow Telkom customers to roam on Vodacom’s 2G, 3G and 4G networks with full effect from June 2019.

CEO, Shameel Joosub says the partnership between the two networks will also result in reduced deployment costs for Telkom and cost savings for Vodacom ultimately contributing to the reduction of data prices in South Africa.

Telkom which also operates data services says the agreement would allow it to use Vodacom’s towers, antennas and shelters to build out its own network.

The fix line provider has had a roaming agreement in place with MTN since its inception nine years ago for 2G and 3G services.

Telkom will conduct a phased transition from the current roaming agreement – This process will conclude in June 2019 when its contract with MTN expires.
