Voice Recognition Advancing Rapidly, But it Can be Manipulated

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 23-07-2018

Tech journalist and MD of World Wide Worx Arthur Goldstuck says while voice recognition is advancing at a rapid pace in the world of technology, it can be manipulated.

Goldstuck was speaking to Radio Islam on Sunday about the advancement of voice controlled devices.

Artificial intelligence and voice recognition software like Siri on iPhone, Bixby on Samsung and Alexa among others have been integrated on many devices like computers, TV’s and even cars.

Goldstuck says as people interact more with social media and social networks, and their own devices using voice, then their voice patterns can also be analysed and used by various advertisers, call centres, recruiters and even for political purposes.

“The kind of information that is fed back to them based on their voice patterns and then the response of their voices can also be analysed and it can be adjusted and keep feeding people things that make them happier. So it’s very insidious, it’s very dangerous as well if it’s not watched carefully.”

However Goldstuck says there is a lot of research being done on how the use of voice recognition could be used to enhance the medical field especially in the mental health sector.
