ELDORADO PARK, South Africa- Citizens in the town south of Johannesburg say that it is unlikely they will vote on May 29, citing unemployment as the main reason.
“What’s the use of me voting and they don’t do nothing for us still? Our young people don’t even have jobs. Me, myself, I don’t have a job. We must rob people, run around. Sassa is not even enough for your children, because that’s only R 530. R 530 can only buy milk,” one voter said.
Another Eldorado Park resident said that while the overall state of the district has improved, including a decrease in violence and an increase in employment opportunities, the future is uncertain and real change remains to be seen.
However, there appears to be a shift in the younger demographic, with one registered voter saying that she will head to the polls at the end of the month, because “it’s important for us as youth to vote. Maybe we’ll make change,” she said.
