Wife Hajar RA – Part 13

Ibrahim عليه السلام Echo: Where Footsteps Become Footprints

Wife Hajar RA

The relationship between Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his wife Hajar (RA) is one of the most inspiring and spiritually rich stories in Islamic tradition. It is a tale of unwavering obedience to Allah, deep trust, and a powerful legacy that continues to impact millions of Muslims each year through the rituals of Hajj.

A Divine Command to Leave Hajar RA and Ismail AS

One of the most pivotal moments in their relationship occurred when Allah commanded Ibrahim (AS) to take Hajar RA and their infant son, Ismail, to a barren desert — the valley of Makkah, which at the time had no inhabitants, vegetation, or water. Without questioning the divine command, Ibrahim (AS) complied, trusting entirely in Allah’s wisdom.

As narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, when Hajar RA saw Ibrahim AS walking away after leaving her in the desert, she asked him:

“O Ibrahim! Where are you going? Are you leaving us in this valley where there is no one and nothing?”

Ibrahim (AS) did not respond. Then she asked:

“Has Allah commanded you to do this?”

Ibrahim (AS) replied:

“نَعَمْ” “Yes.”

She said:

Then He will not abandon us.” al-Bukhari, 3364

This response reflects the incredible faith and resilience of Hajar RA. Her certainty in Allah’s protection is a timeless lesson in tawakkul (trust in Allah).

Ibrahim AS’s Supplication for His Family

After leaving Hajar RA and Ismail AS in the barren valley, Ibrahim (AS) turned to Allah with a heartfelt supplication, demonstrating his love for his family and his trust in Allah’s care:

“Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.” Ibrahim (14: 37)

This powerful du‘ā not only reveals Ibrahim’s deep care for Hajar and Ismail but also his long-term vision — that this barren valley would one day become a center of worship, thanks to their sacrifice.

The Sa’i: A Tribute to Hajar’s Struggle

Left alone with her child, Hajar RA ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water, desperately trying to save her son. Allah honoured her perseverance by causing the miraculous Zamzam spring to gush forth beneath the feet of baby Ismail. The Sa’i, the running between the two hills during Hajj and Umrah, is a direct reenactment of Hajar RA’s devotion and struggle, making her the only woman to have a major ritual of Hajj modeled after her.

“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs Umrah — there is no blame upon him for walking between them.” Al-Baqarah (2: 158)

This verse elevates Hajar RA’s sacrifice to a divine symbol, honored in every pilgrimage.

Mutual Devotion in Obedience to Allah

What stands out most in Ibrahim AS and Hajar RA’s relationship is their shared devotion to Allah. Both were willing to bear separation and hardship, trusting entirely in divine wisdom. Hajar RA raised Ismail (AS) in this difficult environment, instilling in him the same obedience and submission that she and her husband exemplified. It was this upbringing that prepared Ismail AS to utter those heart-rendering words to his noble father during the test of sacrifice:

يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

“O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.” As-Saffat (37: 102)

This shared mission of obedience, trust, and love for Allah was the bedrock of Ibrahim AS and Hajar RA’s relationship and the legacy they passed on to their descendants.

The story of Ibrahim (AS) and Hajar (RA) is a shining example of a relationship built on faith, obedience, and patience. Ibrahim AS fulfilled Allah’s command, even when it meant leaving his beloved wife and son in a desolate land. Hajar RA accepted the divine decree with unwavering trust, and through her effort, Allah brought forth life, water, and eventually the Ka‘bah, built by Ibrahim AS and Ismail AS.
