10 Children Killed by Lightning Strike in Uganda

Ten children sheltering in a hut during a storm were killed by lightning in Uganda. The incident took place in the remote town of Arua. The children had been playing football when a fierce storm forced them to take shelter in a nearby hut with a grass thatched roof.

The BBC reports that nine children were instantly killed by lightning, while one died on the way to hospital. The children were aged 13 to 15. Three survivors have been hospitalized.

According to the BBC, 18 children were killed at a school in Uganda by lightning, in 2011.  It reports that 28 people died from lightning strikes in a single week in the same year.
