Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 4 – Strengthening The Heart: Building a Heart That Lasts
A Calm Heart in Uncertain Times
We live in uncertain times. The world feels unstable. Economies fluctuate. Relationships change. Health fails. Plans crumble. The future is a mystery that none of us can read.
In such times, the natural human response is anxiety. We worry about what comes next. We fear the unknown. We grasp for certainty where none exists.
But the believer is called to something different. The believer is called to a calm heart — a heart that remains peaceful even when the world around it is in chaos.
The Source of Calm
Where does this calm come from? It does not come from denying reality. It does not come from pretending everything is fine. It comes from knowing — truly knowing — that everything is in the hands of the One who controls all things.
Allah says:
“الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ”
“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13: 28)
Remembrance of Allah brings calm. Not because it changes your circumstances, but because it connects you to the One who controls them.
The Certainty Beneath Uncertainty
Beneath all the uncertainty of life lies one absolute certainty: Allah is in control. Nothing happens without His knowledge. Nothing happens without His permission. Nothing happens outside His plan.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ مَا أَخْطَأَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيُصِيبَكَ، وَمَا أَصَابَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِيُخْطِئَكَ”
“Know that what missed you was not meant to hit you, and what hit you was not meant to miss you.” (Ahmad)
Everything is measured. Everything is decreed. Nothing is random. This knowledge calms the heart.
The Calm of the Prophets AS
Look at the Prophets AS in their moments of greatest uncertainty. Ibrahim AS was thrown into the fire. He remained calm. Musa AS stood at the edge of the sea. He remained calm. Muhammad ﷺ hid in the cave while his enemies searched outside. He remained calm.
What was their secret? They knew Allah was with them.
“لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا”
“Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9: 40)
When Allah is with you, what can you fear?
How to Cultivate a Calm Heart?
- Limit your exposure to uncertainty. Do not obsess over news. Do not speculate about the future. Do not borrow worries from tomorrow.
- Stay connected to Allah through prayer. The Prophet ﷺ used to say to Bilal RA:
“أَرِحْنَا بِهَا يَا بِلَالُ”
“Give us rest by it (the prayer), O Bilal.” (Abu Dawud)
Prayer was his rest. It can be yours.
- Take action, then release. Do what you can, then leave the rest to Allah. Worrying after action is pointless. It changes nothing but harms you.
- Repeat this du’a:
“حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ”
“Allah is sufficient for me. There is no deity except Him. Upon Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.”
My brothers and sisters, uncertainty is part of life. But calm is possible. It comes from knowing the One who holds the future. It comes from trusting that His plan is perfect. It comes from resting in His remembrance.
As you leave Ramadhan, take this calm with you. Let it be your companion in every uncertain moment. Let it be the peace that the world cannot give and cannot take away.
May Allah grant us calm hearts in uncertain times and assurance in His remembrance. Ameen.
