Seeing Blessings Clearly – Part 5

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 4 – Strengthening The Heart: Building a Heart That Lasts

Seeing Blessings Clearly

This morning my colleagues spoke about gratitude as a heart cleanser. We learned that Shukr is not just saying “thank you,” but a complete orientation of the heart, tongue, and limbs toward the Giver of all gifts.

But there is a challenge. Many of us want to be grateful. We genuinely want to thank Allah. But we struggle to see the blessings. We look at our lives and all we notice is what’s missing. We focus on what we don’t have, what went wrong, what others have that we lack. The blessings remain invisible.

Therefore, today we speak about Seeing Blessings Clearly. Because you cannot be grateful for what you do not see.

The Veil of Habit

Why do we miss our blessings? The greatest reason is habit. When something is constant, we stop noticing it. We stop seeing the air we breathe, the health we enjoy, the limbs that function, the food that sustains us. They become background noise.

But imagine losing any one of these for a single day. Imagine waking up unable to see. Imagine trying to walk without your legs. Imagine gasping for breath that won’t come. Suddenly, you would see the blessing with painful clarity. You would beg Allah to return it.

The Prophet ﷺ warned us about taking blessings for granted:

“نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ: الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ”

“Two blessings which many people misuse: health and free time.” (Bukhari)

Maghbūn means deceived or cheated. We have these blessings, but we act as if we don’t. We waste them. We fail to see their value until they are gone.

The Lens of Comparison

Another reason we miss blessings is that we compare upward. We look at those who have more — more wealth, more status, more success — and we feel deprived. We forget to look at those who have less.

The Prophet ﷺ gave us the cure:

“انْظُرُوا إِلَى مَنْ أَسْفَلَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَا تَنْظُرُوا إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ فَوْقَكُمْ، فَهُوَ أَجْدَرُ أَنْ لَا تَزْدَرُوا نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ”

“Look at those who are less fortunate than yourselves, not those who are more fortunate, lest you belittle the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you.” (Muslim)

This is not to minimize ambition or discourage seeking betterment. It is to protect your heart from the disease of perpetual dissatisfaction. When you look at those who have less, you realize how much you already have.

Blessings Disguised as Trials

Sometimes the greatest blessings are hidden in what appears to be hardship. A delay may protect you from something worse. A loss may free you from attachment. An illness may cleanse your sins. A difficulty may draw you closer to Allah. Allah says:

“وَعَسَىٰ أَن تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَعَسَىٰ أَن تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَّكُمْ”

“It may be that you dislike something while it is good for you, and it may be that you love something while it is evil for you.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2: 216)

Seeing blessings clearly means trusting Allah’s wisdom even when you cannot see the good. It means believing that everything He chooses for you is ultimately a blessing.

The Blessing of Faith

The greatest blessing, the one that outweighs all others, is the blessing of Islam. The blessing of knowing Allah. The blessing of being guided to His path. The blessing of hope in His mercy.

Security, health, and daily provision. These three are enough to make you wealthy. Add to them the blessing of faith, and you have everything that matters.

How to See Blessings Clearly

Here are practical ways to develop the vision that sees blessings:

  1. Practice daily gratitude listing. Each day, write down three blessings you normally overlook. Clean water. A functioning body. The ability to pray. Someone who loves you. The more you list, the more you see.
  2. Imagine life without them. For each blessing, ask yourself: What would my life be like without this? This exercise instantly reveals value.
  3. Look at those with less. Visit a hospital. Volunteer with the needy. See the struggles of others. Your blessings will come into sharp focus.
  4. Thank Allah for trials too. When something difficult happens, look for the hidden blessing. Protection from a worse fate. An opportunity to earn reward. A reminder to turn back to Him.
  5. Use your blessings for good. The best way to see a blessing is to use it in ways that please the Giver. When you give charity, you see the blessing of wealth. When you pray, you see the blessing of health. When you teach, you see the blessing of knowledge.

My brothers and sisters, the grateful see what others miss. They see the hand of Allah in every detail. They see provision in what looks like poverty. They see mercy in what looks like trial. They see blessings everywhere because their eyes have been opened.

The signs are everywhere. The blessings surround you. Open your eyes and see.

May Allah grant us clear vision and grateful hearts. Ameen.
