Renewal of the Heart and Soul
Phase 3 – Cleansing the Soul: Letting Go to Grow
A Clean Heart and Inner Peace
My dear brothers and sisters, we have travelled a profound journey over these past two days. We spoke about forgiving others for the sake of Allah. We learned the practical steps of letting go of grudges. We understood that holding onto hurt harms us far more than it harms anyone else.
But now, I want you to taste the destination. I want you to see what awaits you on the other side of forgiveness. I want you to experience, even if just for a moment, the beauty of A Clean Heart and Inner Peace.
What does a clean heart feel like? It feels light. It feels free. It feels like walking out of a dark room into the sunlight. It feels like taking off a heavy backpack you have been carrying for years without realizing how heavy it was.
The clean heart is what every human being is searching for. It is the peace that no amount of money can buy, that no relationship can provide, that no achievement can produce. It comes only from one place: a heart purified for Allah.
Success is not wealth. Success is not status. Success is not what the world measures. Success is a purified soul. Success is a clean heart. Everything else is secondary.
What Does a Clean Heart Look Like?
A clean heart is not a heart that never sins. We are human; we will sin. A clean heart is a heart that sins and then returns. That falls and then rises. That carries no grudges, harbours no envy, and holds no malice.
The Prophet ﷺ described the signs of a clean heart, but more directly, he taught us the du’a for a clean heart:
“اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ فِعْلَ الْخَيْرَاتِ وَتَرْكَ الْمُنْكَرَاتِ وَحُبَّ الْمَسَاكِينِ وَأَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي وَتَرْحَمَنِي”
“O Allah, I ask You for the ability to do good deeds, to avoid evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me.” (Ahmad)
A clean heart loves good, hates evil, and cares for others without condition.
Inner Peace: The Fruit of a Clean Heart
When the heart is clean — free from envy, free from grudges, free from pride — what remains? Space. Space for Allah. Space for contentment. Space for peace.
Allah promises this peace:
“هُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَّعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ”
“It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their present faith.” (Surah Al-Fath, 48: 4)
As-Sakīnah — tranquillity, calmness, peace. This is what descends upon the heart that is purified. This is what you feel when you have forgiven everyone, when you have released every grudge, when you have turned completely to Allah.
Imagine waking up in the morning with no bitterness toward anyone. Imagine lying down at night with no replaying of past hurts. Imagine praying with a heart so light it feels like it could fly. This is inner peace. This is the gift of a clean heart.
How to Maintain a Clean Heart
Purifying the heart is not a one-time event. It is daily maintenance. Just as you brush your teeth every day to remove build-up, you must tend to your heart daily.
- Daily self-check
- Daily istighfār
- Daily reflection on death
The Ultimate Promise
Allah reserves the highest reward for those with clean hearts:
“إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَهَرٍ * فِي مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ”
“Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers, in a seat of honour near a Sovereign, All-Powerful.” (Surah Al-Qamar, 54: 54-55)
A seat of honour near Allah. This is for the righteous. And righteousness begins with the heart.
My brothers and sisters, the path to this peace is open. It requires letting go — of grudges, of pride, of envy, of the need to be right. It requires emptying your heart of everything except Allah.
But the destination is worth it. A clean heart. Inner peace. And ultimately, nearness to the One who created you.
Start now. Forgive. Release. Purify. And taste the peace that only He can give.
May Allah grant us clean hearts, inner peace, and nearness to Him. Ameen.
