Safeguarding the Soul – Part 2

Post Ramadhan: From Peak Moments to a Lifetime of Connection

Safeguarding the Soul: Maintaining the Shield of Taqwa

Yesterday we spoke about keeping momentum and choosing one habit to carry forward. Today, we need to address something more fundamental. We need to talk about how we protect ourselves now that the training wheels are off.

During Ramadhan, the environment worked in our favour. The doors of Paradise were open, the devils were chained, and the atmosphere was spiritually charged. It was easy to be good. But now it is different. Now, the Shaytan are back. The distractions are everywhere. The old arguments, the bad habits, the careless words — they are all knocking at our door again.

So the question is: How do we maintain the shield of Taqwa we built in Ramadhan when the arrows of distraction are flying at us from every direction?

What Is Taqwa, Really?

Let us revisit what Taqwa actually means. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (2: 183)

That word righteous is Taqwa. It comes from the root word wiqayah, which means shield or protection. Taqwa is not just a feeling. It is a conscious state of being — a shield you wear that reminds you: Allah is with you, even when no one else is watching.

In Ramadhan, that shield was reinforced daily. The hunger reminded you. The thirst reminded you. The gathering for Taraweeh reminded you. But now, in the noise of regular life, we must find new ways to keep that shield close to our chest.

The Two Types of Fasting

The scholars tell us there are two levels of fasting. There is the fasting of the stomach — abstaining from food and drink. We have completed that. But then there is the fasting of the senses — the fast of the tongue, the eyes, the ears, and the heart. This is the fasting that must continue beyond Ramadhan.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us: “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.” (Bukhari)

Think about that. The abstinence from food was a means to an end. The real goal was to train us to abstain from sin. So now that we are eating and drinking again, have we abandoned that training? Or are we carrying it forward?

Practical Tools to Maintain Taqwa

Let me give you three practical tools to keep your Taqwa strong in the post-Ramadhan world.

First: The Pause.

Before you speak, pause. Before you click on something you should not see, pause. Before you react in anger, pause. In that split second, remember Allah. The scholars call this muraqabah — mindfulness of Allah. The companion Umar ibn al-Khattab RA used to say, “Hold yourself accountable before you are held accountable.” That pause is your shield. Use it.

Second: Guard Your Tongue.

One of the hardest things to maintain after Ramadhan is our speech. We get back into old habits: gossip, backbiting, harsh jokes, useless arguments. Allah reminds us: “Not a word does he utter except that there is a watcher by him ready to record it.” (Qaf 50: 18)

If you did not lie in Ramadhan, do not lie today. If you did not backbite in Ramadhan, do not backbite today. The fast of the tongue is actually harder than the fast of the stomach, but its rewards are even greater.

Third: Keep the Night Vigil, Even Briefly.

One of the things we will miss most is the night prayer. We stood in Qiyam and felt our hearts soften. Do not abandon this entirely. Even if you cannot stand for hours, wake up ten minutes before Fajr. Make Dua. Ask Allah to keep you firm. That quiet moment in the dark is when the heart connects most deeply. It will recharge your Taqwa for the day ahead.

The Reality of Shaytan’s Return

We must be honest with ourselves. Shaytan is back. And their first target is the person who just spent thirty days in worship. They want to undo all that progress.

But remember: Shaytan can only whisper. He cannot force you. You have the power to say no. You have the shield of Taqwa. You just have to choose to keep wearing it.
