Aligning the Heart with Allah’s Pleasure – Part 9

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 2 – Awakening the Heart: From Routine to Purpose

Aligning the Heart with Allah’s Pleasure

Respected listeners, as we continue our journey through this blessed month under the theme of renewal, we have today explored the engine of our spiritual life. We learned that Sincerity (Ikhlāṣ) is the fuel that purifies our actions, and we discovered that even Small Deeds, when powered by a Big Heart, carry immense weight with Allah ﷻ.

But this raises a fundamental question. If sincerity is the fuel, and our deeds are the vehicle, how do we know which direction to drive? How do we ensure we are not just moving, but moving toward the right destination? The answer lies in what we call Alignment.

Today, we speak about Aligning the Heart with Allah’s Pleasure.

Imagine a compass. No matter where you place it, the needle will always, relentlessly, point north. That is its purpose. The heart of a believer is designed to be the same. It is a compass created to find the magnetic pull of Allah’s pleasure and orient itself toward it, no matter the circumstances. The process of spiritual renewal is, in essence, the process of re-calibrating this compass. It is removing the rust and interference of the world that makes the needle shaky, hesitant, and prone to pointing in the wrong direction.

So, what does it mean to align our hearts with Allah’s pleasure? Simply put, it is to make the pleasure of Allah the single, non-negotiable criterion for every choice we make.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us a beautiful supplication that encapsulates this: “I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of every deed that will bring me closer to Your love.” He also said, “…and I ask You for the pleasure of being pleased (with Your decree).” This hadith shows us that alignment is not just about actions, but about the very core of our emotional and spiritual being. It is about loving what Allah loves and being content with what He gives.

In practical terms, how does this alignment manifest in our lives? How do we know if our compass is pointing true north?

  1. Alignment means choosing Allah’s command over your desire.

This is the battlefield of the soul. Every single day, we are faced with choices. The alarm goes off for Fajr. Your desire says, “Just five more minutes.” The pleasure of Allah lies in getting up and standing before Him. Alignment is that internal shift where the thought of disappointing Allah becomes heavier than the thought of losing sleep. It is choosing the halal income over the haram shortcut, even if the haram is easier. Every time you choose Allah’s pleasure over your whim, you are strengthening the compass.

  1. Alignment means finding peace in Allah’s decree.

Life is unpredictable. Some days bring joy, and some days bring trials that shake us to our core. The unaligned heart looks at a difficulty and screams, “Why me?” It is restless, angry, and bitter. The aligned heart, however, understands a profound secret: Allah’s pleasure is found not only in what He gives, but also in what He withholds. The aligned heart, in the depths of hardship, finds a way to whisper, “My Lord, I am displeased with my situation, but I am pleased with You. I trust that You have chosen this for me, and that in Your choice is wisdom I cannot see.” This is the station of Ar-Ridā bil Qada(being pleased with Allah). This is the peak of alignment.

  1. Alignment means finding joy in obedience and discomfort in disobedience.

When the compass is calibrated, it reacts instantly to magnetic fields. Similarly, when the heart is aligned with Allah, it should react to sin. A believer with an aligned heart doesn’t just avoid sin out of fear of punishment, but out of a sense of repulsion. They feel the spiritual “nudge” away from it. Likewise, they don’t just perform prayer as a duty; they find genuine sweetness in it. They long for the quiet moments of the night to speak with their Creator because that is where their true north lies.

This Ramadan is our prime opportunity for re-calibration. Our fasts, our prayers, our charity—they are all exercises designed to weaken the pull of our desires and strengthen our sensitivity to Allah’s pleasure. When we are hungry, we are reminded that we are not ruled by our stomachs. When we are tired, we pray, reminding ourselves that we are not ruled by our bodies. We are ruled by our commitment to Allah.

Ask yourself:

  • Where is my compass pointing?
  • Is it pointing toward status, wealth, and the approval of people?
  • Or is it trembling, searching, trying its best to find the pleasure of the Almighty?

Let us use the remaining days of Ramadan to clean the needle of our hearts. Let us ask Allah, sincerely, to align us with what pleases Him.

A sound heart. A renewed heart. A heart aligned with Allah’s pleasure. That is the goal. That is the destination.

May Allah, the Turner of hearts, turn our hearts towards His pleasure and keep them there. Ameen.
