The ANC has sent one of its most high-profile members into the political wilderness as it confirmed the expulsion of former secretary-general Ace Magashule. He was given seven days to make representations as to why he should not be expelled but failed to do so, leading to the party’s national disciplinary committee confirming his expulsion yesterday.
A political analyst, Kim Heller, discussed the implications of his expulsion on Radio Islam International, saying it was inevitable.
Regarding his options, Heller said he could retire or join another party as he has significant ground support, especially in his home province and could become a thorn in the side of the ANC, leading to other parties trying to woo him to their side.
Speaking on what he would gain by joining another party after having enjoyed leadership within the ANC, Heller says politics has changed, and some of Magashule’s policies align with those of the EFF, whom he may join.
However, according to Heller, another school of thought says Magahsule may wait to see the fall of the ANC, which could see him rejoin the party, which speaks to the very divided ANC.
Many comments said he went out “with a whimper,” to which Heller responded that the RET faction was utterly destroyed even though they had multiple opportunities, but there was no unity. She added that it was more the decimation of the RET rather than of Ace Magashule.
Heller spoke on the relationship between Magashule and Zuma, saying they have a long history, but Magahsule would be more cautious.
