Earth Day was just a few days ago, prompting us to reflect on reducing our ecological footprint and saving resources where possible.
With the soaring costs of living and energy prices, many households are looking for ways to stretch their budgets. Radio Islam International discussed changes we can make inside our homes to make a difference with Zainub Badat, the Assistant Manager at Norwood Hardware.
Zainub began the discussion points with a popular Hadeeth on the environment by Nabi Muhammed (SAW).
The Holy Prophet of Islam (PBUH) said, “The earth is green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you his stewards over it.”
Badat explored a few major electricity consumers and how to identify simple changes.
“Lighting is a major culprit, switching to LED bulbs can help reduce 80% less energy than a traditional bulb. They also last longer and replacement is needed less often,” explains Badat.
According to Badat, another big drain on consumption is that many electronic devices continue to draw small amounts of electricity, which we tend to leave on for long periods of time.
Another big energy user in the house is water heating. The assumption is that at least 50% of electricity consumption in South Africa as most homes do not have piped gas, for the most part on the electricity system.
“Turning the geyser on and off completely when it’s not is use, can definitely save some energy. However, for a more consistent and efficient solution, Badat advises considering other options.”
It’s always a good idea to monitor your spending habits. Fuel prices, groceries, and utility bills this winter are still high, but little changes you make around the house can make a big difference in your monthly costs.
