Designing the Second Half of Ramadhan – Part 19

Renewal of the Heart and Soul

Phase 2 – Awakening the Heart: From Routine to Purpose

Designing the Second Half of Ramadhan – A Strategic Plan for the Final Sprint

My dear brothers and sisters, we stand at a critical crossroads. The first ten days of Ramadhan has passed. Some of us made the most of it. Some of us feel we could have done better. But here is the beautiful truth of our faith: What matters is not what has passed, but what remains. The Prophet ﷺ taught us:

“إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالْخَوَاتِيمِ”

“Verily, deeds are judged by their endings.” (Bukhari)

The ending is what matters most. And the ending of Ramadhan is its second half — specifically, the last ten nights. Today, we speak about Designing the Second Half of Ramadhan.

If the first half was about building momentum, the second half is about peaking at the finish line. If the first half was about warming up, the second half is about the sprint. This is not a time to coast. This is a time to accelerate.

The Prophet ﷺ set the example for us. Aisha RA described his practice:

“كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَجْتَهِدُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مَا لَا يَجْتَهِدُ فِي غَيْرِهِ”

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would strive in the last ten days more than he would at any other time.” (Muslim)

He didn’t just maintain his effort. He increased it. He tightened his waist belt, woke his family, and devoted himself completely to worship.

So how do we design our second half? How do we create a plan that ensures we don’t let these precious days’ slip away?

  1. Reset Your Intention with Urgency.

Begin by sitting alone and renewing your commitment. Say to yourself: These next days may be my last chance. I do not know if I will see another Ramadhan. I will treat every remaining day as if it is my only opportunity to earn Allah’s pleasure. Let this urgency fuel your actions.

  1. Identify the Night of Power.

Allah tells us:

“لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ”

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” (Surah Al-Qadr, 97: 3)

A thousand months is over eighty-three years. One night of sincere worship can be better than a lifetime. Design your second half around seeking this night. The Prophet ﷺ told us to look for it in the odd nights of the last ten. So dedicate special attention to the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights.

  1. Create a Second Half Schedule.

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Design a realistic but ambitious schedule for these remaining days:

Increase Your Quran: If you read one Juz’ a day in the first half, aim for one and a half or two. But more importantly, read with reflection, especially at night.

Intensify Your Night Prayers: The last ten nights are for Qiyam. Even if you cannot pray for hours, pray with presence. Even a few heartfelt rak’ahs are better than a hundred distracted ones.

Give Extra Charity: The Prophet’ ﷺs charity increased like the wind in Ramadhan. Give something every day, even if small. Intend it for Laylatul Qadr.

Make Lengthy Du’a: Prepare a list of du’as. For yourself, your family, the Ummah. The night of Qadr is a night of answering. Ask abundantly.

  1. Involve Your Family.

The Prophet ﷺ would wake his family in the last ten nights. Do not worship alone. Wake your spouse. Wake your children, even for a few minutes. Let your home come alive with worship. Aisha RA reported:

“كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ شَدَّ مِئْزَرَهُ وَأَحْيَا لَيْلَهُ وَأَيْقَظَ أَهْلَهُ”

“When the last ten days began, the Prophet would tighten his waist belt, stay up at night, and wake his family.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

  1. Balance Worship with Self-Care.

This is a sprint, but you still need to reach the finish line. Take short naps during the day. Eat lightly. Conserve your energy for the nights. The goal is sustainability within intensity.

  1. Guard Your Heart from Distractions.

In these final days, minimize social media, unnecessary conversations, and worldly concerns. Your focus should be single: pleasing Allah. The less you engage with the dunya, the more your heart will connect with its Creator.

My brothers and sisters, the first half is gone. We cannot retrieve it. But the second half is here, in our hands, full of potential and mercy. Do not let it pass like the first. Design it. Plan it. Own it.

The time is now. The opportunity is here. Seize it before it slips away.

May Allah bless us in the remaining days, allow us to reach Laylatul Qadr, and accept from us all. Ameen.
