Father of Prophets AS – Part 9

Ibrahim عليه السلام Echo: Where Footsteps Become Footprints

Father of Prophets

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) holds a unique and revered position in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. In Islamic tradition, he is known as Abu’l-Anbiyā’ — the Father of the Prophets AS — a title that reflects not only his biological lineage but also his spiritual legacy. His distinction as the patriarch of many of the greatest prophets, including Ishaq, Ya‘qub, Musa, ‘Isa and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), is a testament to the honour he received from Allah. But it was not merely his lineage that earned him this status — it was his unwavering submission, sincerity, and love for Allah that made him the cornerstone of prophetic tradition.

A Chosen Leader and a Spiritual Patriarch

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was chosen by Allah for a divine mission of establishing monotheism and calling people away from idolatry. His da’wah was rooted in Tawḥid, and his legacy of belief and obedience was preserved through his descendants.

“Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Ibrahim and the family of ‘Imran over the worlds.” Al ‘Imran (3: 33)

This divine selection shows that Ibrahim (AS) was not just a prophet, but a foundational figure in the spiritual guidance of humanity. Allah made him the father of a prophetic dynasty that would carry divine revelation across generations.

The Du‘ā That Shaped History

The Qur’an records a powerful supplication made by Ibrahim (AS) that shows his foresight and concern for future generations:

رَبَّنَا وَٱجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا وَتُبْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

“Our Lord, make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance.” Al-Baqarah (2: 128)

And later:

“Our Lord, and send among them a Messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them.” Al-Baqarah (2: 129)

This prayer was answered centuries later in the person of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was a descendant of Ismail AS, the son of Ibrahim (AS). Thus, Ibrahim AS’s spiritual vision and concern for humanity made him the originator of the final prophetic mission.

Biological and Spiritual Lineage

Ibrahim (AS) had two sons through whom his legacy was carried: Ismail (AS) and Ishaq (AS). From Ishaq came Ya‘qub, then Yusuf, Musa, Dawud, Sulayman and ‘Isa, peace be upon them all. From Ismail came the final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, who said:

“I am the answer to the supplication of my father Ibrahim.” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 2165)

This biological lineage reflects a deeper spiritual connection, as Ibrahim AS’s relationship with Allah was based on submission, sacrifice, and sincerity, values that each of these prophets exemplified.

His Relationship with Allah: The Foundation of Prophetic Legacy

Allah describes Ibrahim (AS) with the highest of praises:

إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا لِّلَّهِ حَنِيفًا وَلَمْ يَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

“Indeed, Ibrahim was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.” An-Naḥl (16: 120)

“And Allah took Ibrahim as an intimate friend (Khalīl).” An-Nisā’ (4: 125)

These descriptions illustrate a relationship of deep love, trust, and closeness. Ibrahim AS’s submission to Allah in all circumstances — whether being thrown into the fire, leaving his family in the desert, or offering his son in sacrifice — earned him the divine friendship and made him a beacon for all future Prophets AS.

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was not just a father in the biological sense—he was the spiritual patriarch of generations of prophets and believers. His intimate relationship with Allah, marked by obedience, du‘ā, sacrifice, and sincerity, laid the foundation for prophetic guidance that would reach every corner of the globe.
