The President has announced the date of local elections for this year to be held on 4 November 2026.

According to the IEC’s General Manager for Communications Fikile Moya, the final official voter registration weekend will be formalized once the Minister of COGTA proclaims the date, the date is gazetted and made into a public holiday, and no other voters can add their name to the voters’ role. While the tentative date for final registrations is set for this weekend, voters can register up until the proclamation date, which is expected to be announced any time in August.

People will be able to register online via their phones or devices on the IEC website, or at a physical space for those who do not have access to Wi-Fi or are not technologically able. Fikile says that to register on the website, simply go to www.elections.org and follow the easy steps and prompts. When registering, you will need to have your ID number and actual ID document that you will be required to scan.

People who have voted in past elections and are still residing in the same ward should check their voter status at their particular voting station. For those who have relocated to other areas or have undergone a “boundary change,” they should check their voting status and familiarise themselves with the voting station. They should also check who the councillors of the ward they are now living in are so that they can choose who to vote for.
