With the matric class 2024 completing their final exams, Gauteng Traffic Police have issued stern warnings about the dangers of pens-down parties, urging students and parents to prioritize safety over celebration.

Speaking to Radio Islam International, Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Officer Obed Sibasa highlighted the risks associated with these gatherings, often marked by underage drinking, narcotics, and overcrowding. “These events are hotspots for theft, assault, substance abuse, and even fatal incidents,” he cautioned. Recalling a tragic case, Sibasa shared the story of a young learner who lost his life in a drunk-driving accident after attending a similar party.

Authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of students. “We’ve deployed officers across schools, parks, and known gathering spots to monitor activity and enforce the law,” said Sibasa. He also warned tavern and property owners against selling alcohol to underage youth, stating that violators risk having their liquor licenses revoked and facing arrest.

The warnings come from increasing reports of unsupervised pens-down celebrations, sometimes held in private homes without parental knowledge. Sibasa stressed, “Parents need to be vigilant. Sometimes, learners leave home in uniform but change into casual clothes and attend illegal gatherings.”

To event organizers hosting street parties or illegal events, Sibasa had a clear message: “We will confiscate sound systems and impose hefty fines. The law prohibits unauthorized public celebrations, and compliance is non-negotiable.”

The tragic 2022 Enyobeni Tavern deaths in East London remain a sombre reminder of the consequences of unregulated gatherings. Authorities and organizations like the World Changes Candidate (WCC) are urging families to ensure celebrations are lawful and safe. As Officer Sibasa aptly concluded, “Celebrate responsibly. Let your success mark the start of a bright future, not the end of it. One bad decision can change everything.”

For learners celebrating their milestone, safety and responsible choices are paramount in marking the end of their schooling journey.
