Senior Researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Dr Ghaneshree Moonsamy says probiotic technology plays an important role in the human health and the state of human health.

Dr Moonsamy was speaking to Radio Islam on Monday about the CSIR and the research tasks undertaken by the council.

Recently, the CSIR has developed solvent-free ‘green’ encapsulation technologies for sensitive actives used in animal and human health such as probiotics, proteins, vaccines, drugs, vitamins and bioactive plant extracts to enhance their shelf-life stability and/or bioavailability.

Dr Moonsamy says the state of human health has been impacted over time.

“Because of our dietary habits our gut health has suffered over time and our current microflora or organisms that are in our gut do not function the way they supposed to and the environment within our intestine and our gut system are ideal for these existing organisms to do what it supposed to.”

Dr Moonsamy says because of the lack of food value extraction organisms in the gut are being supplemented with beneficial organisms with probiotics in the form of capsules or food and nutrient supplements where specific food could be fortified.
