My Lord Nurtures Me

Strengthening Dependence on Allah

One of the most profound ways Allah nurtures us is through trials that strengthen our dependence on Him. As human beings, we often become overly reliant on our own abilities, forgetting that true power and control belong to Allah alone. Through challenges, Allah lovingly reminds us of our need for Him, deepening our trust (tawakkul), humility, and connection with Him.

  1. Trials Remind Us That Allah Is Our Only Source of Help

As humans, we naturally seek control over our lives. However, when difficulties arise that are beyond our control, we are reminded that only Allah has the power to change our condition. This realization humbles us and draws us closer to Him. Allah says:

قُلْ أَغَيْرَ ٱللَّهِ أَتَّخِذُ وَلِيًّۭا فَاطِرِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَهُوَ يُطْعِمُ وَلَا يُطْعَمُ ۗ قُلْ إِنِّىٓ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ أَسْلَمَ ۖ وَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

“Say, ‘Shall I take as a protector anyone other than Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, while it is He who feeds and is not fed?’ Say, ‘I have been commanded to be the first to submit and not to be among the polytheists.'” (Al-An’am 6: 14)

This verse teaches us that Allah is our only true Protector and Provider – no one else can sustain or guide us.

Interesting Fact: Why Hardships Bring Us Closer to Allah

When life is easy, people often forget Allah. In times of hardship, our hearts turn back to Him.

Even atheists instinctively call upon a higher power in desperate situations, proving our innate need for Allah.

  1. Trials Remove Arrogance and Teach Humility

Hardships shatter our illusion of self-sufficiency. They teach us humility by making us realize that we are entirely dependent on Allah. Allah says:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ أَنتُمُ ٱلْفُقَرَآءُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ هُوَ ٱلْغَنِىُّ ٱلْحَمِيدُ

“O mankind, you are in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.” (Al-Fatir 35: 15)

When a person becomes sick, loses wealth, or faces hardship, they realize that their strength, intelligence, or power cannot save them — only Allah can.

Example: Prophet Yunus عليه السلام

When Yunus عليه السلام was swallowed by the whale, he was in complete darkness and helplessness.

He called out to Allah:

لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

“There is no god but You, Glory be to You! Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers.” (Al-Anbiya 21: 87)

Allah saved him because of his sincerity and humility.

This shows that when we humble ourselves before Allah, He rescues us from the depths of hardship.

  1. Trials Teach Us to Turn to Du’a (Supplication)

Difficulties push us to increase our prayers and seek Allah’s help.

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌۭ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.” (Qur’an 2: 186)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِنَّ الدُّعَاءَ هُوَ الْعِبَادَةُ

“Indeed the supplication is the worship.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3828)

This means that Allah wants us to ask Him and loves when we rely on Him through du’a.

Trials Are a Gift That Bring Us Closer to Allah

  • They remind us that only Allah is in control.
  • They strengthen our trust (tawakkul) in Him.
  • They remove arrogance and increase humility.
  • They push us to make more du’a.
  • They increase our connection with the Qur’an.
  • They earn us Allah’s love and reward.
