Permissibility to Eat Meat – Part 1

As the days of Qurbani draw near, the thoughts of viewing and booking animals for slaughter, the sharpening of the knives, pulling out your gumboots and overalls and the excitement of the kids are all just too familiar.

However, the amount of Muslims who identify themselves as Vegan or Vegetarian is certainly on the rise and increasing. Now they obviously do it for many different reasons, some for health, some for taste and some for personal choice; yet there are some in this world who hardly ever get to taste meat and might only be lucky to do so during this occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.

The difference between vegan and vegetarian we will discussed later, but the tricky question which some people seem to grapple with is, “Can a Muslim be a vegan or a Vegetarian?”

So firstly let us understand that it is perfectly fine to eat meat. Yes there are rules and regulations with regard to the Name of Allah being taken before slaughter, which meat – because not all animals can be eaten, and the method of slaughter etc. but the point is Allah has made it permissible to eat meat and this ruling is supported by numerous verses of the Holy Quran and the Ahaadith.

Let`s take a look at some of them:

O you who have attained to faith! Partake of the good things which We have provided for you as sustenance, and render thanks unto Allah, if it is [truly] Him that you worship. [Al Baqara 2: 172]

He has only forbidden you ˹to eat˺ carrion, blood, swine,1 and what is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah. But if someone is compelled by necessity—neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediate need—they will not be sinful. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Al Baqara 2: 173]

O believers! Fulfil your contract obligations. All four-legged animals from livestock are lawful to you other than those which are hereby announced. However do not violate the prohibition of hunting while you are in Ihram (Hajj dress). Indeed Allah orders whatever He pleases. [Al Maida 5: 1]

Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, and swine; what is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah; what is killed by strangling, beating, a fall, or by being gored to death; what is partly eaten by a predator unless you slaughter it; and what is sacrificed on altars. You are also forbidden to draw lots for decisions. This is all evil. Today the disbelievers have given up all hope of ˹undermining˺ your faith. So do not fear them; fear Me! Today I have perfected your faith for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your way. But whoever is compelled by extreme hunger—not intending to sin—then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [Al Maida 5: 3]

They ask you, ˹O Prophet,˺ what is permissible for them ˹to eat˺. Say, “What is good and lawful. Also what is caught by your hunting animals and birds of prey which you have trained as instructed by Allah. So eat what they catch for you, but mention the Name of Allah over it ˹first˺.” And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is swift in reckoning. [Al Maida 5: 4]

Today all good, pure foods have been made lawful for you. Similarly, the food of the People of the Book1 is permissible for you and yours is permissible for them. [Al Maida 5: 5]

So these verses of the Holy Quran have certainly made it clear that as Muslims Allah has made it permissible for us to consume meat albeit with rules and regulations.

Let`s see what the Hadith has to say:

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah the Almighty is Good and accepts only that which is good. And verily Allah has commanded the believers to do that which He has commanded the Messengers. So the Almighty has said: “O (you) Messengers! Eat of the tayyibat [all kinds of halal (legal) foods], and perform righteous deeds.” [23:51] and the Almighty has said: “O you who believe! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you.” [2:172]” Then he (ﷺ) mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is dishevelled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying “O Lord! O Lord!,” while his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram, so how can [his supplication] be answered? [Muslim]

On the authority of Abu Ya’la Shaddad bin Aws (RA), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Verily Allah has prescribed ihsan (proficiency, perfection) in all things. So if you kill then kill well; and if you slaughter, then slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and let him spare suffering to the animal he slaughters.” [Muslim]

The fact that the Prophet ﷺ taught us how to slaughter an animal obviously indicates the permissibility of slaughtering, the purpose of which is to obtain meat which can be eaten.
