Pretoria Hijacking Hotspot for Cyclists

By Neelam Rahim

Cyclists and joggers on Pretoria roads are reportedly under threat following several reported incidents of cyclists and joggers being attacked or hijacked at hotspots.

Speaking to Radio Islam International, criminologist Guy Lamb said this happens in many cities throughout South Africa, including Cape Town and Ethikwini.

He says many cyclists who take the sport seriously own costly bicycles, and as a result, these are movable property that can be sold by criminals who attack them. And often, many cyclists and joggers would have electronic equipment on them, whether mobile phones or fitness trackers such as iPhone watches, sometimes even expensive sung glasses.

According to Guy, cyclists and joggers are vulnerable targets in certain areas where there are few other people, police or security. It all depends on the site in which you are jogging and cycling.

He says these attacks undermine the community spirit and people’s need to exercise as it is a form of relaxation, remaining healthy, and a social aspect. It makes everyone feel unsafe, especially women, and it is difficult for women to exercise in public spaces in South Africa because of the high violence against women.

Protection tips Guy shared with Radio Islam regarding protection for joggers and cyclists while training include very tight jogging or cycling that share information about the danger issues, where they can apply pressure on the police to patrol certain areas.

He added that unity is strong here and is about jogging and cycling together.
